Grain Refining Master Alloys
Grain refining master alloys, such as AlTi5B1 (Aluminum-5% Titanium-1% Boron), are used to reduce grain size during solidification. A finer grain structure improves the casting's mechanical strength, ductility, and surface finish, resulting in a more homogeneous material that is less prone to defects.
Modifying Master Alloys
Modifying master alloys, such as AlSr10 (Aluminum-10% Strontium), are primarily used in silicon-based eutectic alloys (e.g., AlSi7Mg) to alter the morphology of the silicon phase from an acicular (needle-like) form to a globular form. This treatment produces a finer, more evenly distributed microstructure, thereby enhancing the casting's toughness and machinability.
